man oh man....I'm from south Florida, and around 1982 I played a joint
where Jaco had run up a bar tab and bolted. The club owner was a
golfing bud, and he had no idea who "John Francis Pastorius" was, so
he mentioned the "loser" who skipped on a big tab the night before,
and told me that at least he kept his drivers license. When I realized
whose license he had, I told him who Jaco was and that I had occasion
to run into him almost weekly at the local hot spots. He didn't care
about Jaco's fame or talent, only that it must afford him the means to
pay the tab, so he gave me the license and told me to collect the tab
for him and pass the license back to Jaco.

I carried that license around for about 3 weeks and didn't run into
Jaco again, so I ended up giving it back to the club owner. I did
have several more bizarre and memorable Jaco encounters in the early
80s, but after fate played out, I sometimes wish I would have just
kept the license. By the time I gave it back to the club, the owner
had already written off the tab and probably just threw the thing in
the garbage.

I wonder what that would bring on ebay?. I would never exploit it
anyway. I still have south Florida connections that are tied into his
family, and I respect the family and Jaco's legacy to them too much to
ever be so cheesy.

He was special and tormented, so I hope his soul has found peace.

Agreed...that's why it really bugs me that some guy is trying to make
a ****load of money off him.

Is the amp more valuable than a run of the mill AMP-240, yes but this
$16,000 hucksterism smacks of shellacing Elvis's last turd and
auctioning it off.

And he broke his hand in high school so he had to give up drums and settle for bass.

Y'know, if it was the Acoustic 360 amp that Jaco used on 99% of his
gigs I suppose I could understand the "Collector Appeal". But this is
from late in his career, & it's an amp that the manufacturer *gave* to
him in exchange for an endorsement no doubt...where's the value in
that?

Well, a little bit of history might be in order here. Russ Allee designed the
Acoustic 361 and the AMP240. I don't know if Russ gave Jaco the 240 or not (and
it's not worth a long distance call to Russ to find out), but personally, I
doubt if Jaco got it for free. The AMP was a worthy successor to the Acoustic
Control stuff, and it's a shame Russ couldn't make a go of AMP. He's a talented
electronics engineer. The AMP stuff has great resale value for those who know
what it's worth.

When ARP went out of business they had a bunch of Musitronics gear
that they had given to Alphonso Johnson (a gifted bassist in his own
right, contemporary of Jaco & more recently a veteran of Santana's
band) which for some reason Alphonso had given back...and they
couldn't *give* that crap away! (Well, actually they did give it away,
which is how I got it, along w/ stupid signed afadavits from
Alphonso.) Now that seems like a more appropriate price for some swag
a manufacturer gave to a musician in exchange for endorsement. $16k? I
don't think so.

Some schmuck will buy it though.

I doubt it. It is a great amp, but that price tag is ****in' ridiculous.

Well, figure it this way. Just how many of these "one of a kind" bass amps
owned by Jaco do you think he has? g

may be its because you had to give it up - after all it could be worse and
