Default Sennheiser HD580

I just got a Sennheiser HD580 after ten or fifteen years of
HD530.

Everything suddenly sounds very bassy, as if someone had added
an octave of bass extension and simultaneously cranked the 80 Hz
band. Is it my not being used to it, or is the bass on the HD580
a bit flabby ? I played DSOTM, _Meddle_, _Wish you were here_
plus other assorted non-Pink Floyd stuff. On most things, the
bass does not feel quite right. I'd never wittingly make mixes
like that. If I mixed on an HD580, my mixes would sound thin
elsewhere...

Other than the bass, I'm happy with it so far. If there are any
colourations above 100 Hz, they're too subtle for me to notice.

Let's say that your old phones lacked response below 80 Hz. Would that
explain what you hear?

Lots of people including myself say "just right".

One reason why one checks mixes on a variety of target systems.

Agreed, but add "below 100Hz" to that statement.

More like my old phones had a dip at 80 Hz. That or I suck at
analyzing what I hear. :-)

I gave it a try with a sine sweep (unweighted). The response
curve is generally smooth but not *that* smooth in the bass. I
hear some sort of wide peak between 75 Hz and 100 Hz. Whether
it's the phones, Fletcher-Munson or my ears, I don't know.
