Just a random question that popped into my head:
Is there any disadvantage to suspending monitors by cable/rope from the ceiling of a mixing room (if done securely)? are there any advantages to doing so? Dave |

You now have mechanical coupling to the ceiling which can make things difficult in a lot of rooms. are there any advantages to doing so? When you see this, it's mostly an attempt to get the speakers out of the way and save space in a cluttered control booth. --scott -- "C'est un Nagra. C'est suisse, et tres, tres precis." |

Is there any disadvantage to suspending monitors by cable/rope from the
ceiling of a mixing room (if done securely)? The main disadvantage is that it really evokes an early 1970's control room vibe. are there any advantages to doing so? The great advantage is that it really evokes an early 1970's control room vibe. Scott Fraser |

Main disadvantage: The speakers are no longer securely anchored, but
swinging freely. Folks discovered back in the 1970s that speakers sound better when they're not free to move back and forth, and speaker stands have been standard practice for both audiophiles and studio installations ever since. Peace, Paul |

You don't see rigged PA stacks flappin' in the breeze at outdoor concerts, do you? Well, those aren't hanging from a ceiling. You're right; of course it's possible for flown speakers to be solidly braced. But the original poster was talking about having them swinging freely from chains, from the sound of it, and that's not good. Peace, Paul |
