Default Please explain what just happened

I was recording gospel choir saturday
set up
mac g4 400 notebbok
Iomega hdd80 outboard hd using usb1.1
Spark Me
USBpre
direct signal off board

when I did test recordings I would get(after 40 seconds or so) BUFFER
full with non-valid data
at this point I was trying to use my(usb1.1), iomega hdd 80 gig as the
temp file

when I reloaded spark me onto my G4(from the iomega) and used the hard
disk native in my mac(10 gig) every thing worked fine,as long as the
iomega was not connected

the issue is I only have 2.5 gigs available on the 10 gig native hard
drive in the g4
I would really like to get to where I can record a file of almost
endless length(much greater than 2.5 gig)
what is it I am missing on how to make this happen?

Record to a disk directly on the machines chipset.

Spark Me
USBpre

Especially with such a critter.

For a simplified guideline: the last quarter of a harddisk, even if
defragmented, is only a quarter of the speed of the outer quarter.

I would really like to get to where I can record a file of almost

A bigger internal harddisk, also because a bigger disk is likely to be
faster than the one you have now. So much has been happening with disk
surface density recently that a disk which is older than 3 years is
outdated for some uses, such as large audio files. It can have plenty
life left in an office machine or for backups, and be an excellent
performer, but if it really has to move audio, then it should be of the
generation that started with WD1200 and the Seagate B4's.

Kind regards

USB 1.1 is 12 Mbs, while Firewire is 400 Mbs and USB 2.0 is 480 Mbs.
Unfortunately you can't change your USB port, so I suspect that you won't be
getting much use out of the system that way. Now if the G4 has Firewire,
then the drive can be changed over to an external Firewire drive enclosure
and work just fine. Assuming nothing else is on the Firewire you should be
talking about 50 MB/s throughput and that should end your problems. I
don't, however, know whether the G4 has Firewire built in, but I believe it
does. The drive is the same for either USB or Firewire, so
interchangability is a matter of undoing the USB case and buying a Firewire
case.

You might just pull your old IDE drive out of the USB enclosure and put
it in a $25 caddy like this

http://store.yahoo.com/colorcase-store/22405.html (scroll all the way to the
right)

and then use it with this $135 Firewire "Drive dock", giving you a removable
firewire drive.

http://www.npstudios.com/firedock/

When you need more storage in the future, it's a lot cheaper just to have
to buy an IDE drive and a caddy.

( This what many guys using Mackie MDR/HDR hard disk recorders are using, as
a firewire drive is a faster way to get the info from the recorders into their
computers. )
