Default Modifying level controls Tascam HD-P2

The Tascam HD-P2 is a great machine for the price, and Ambient's timecode makes it very usable for double-system film/video field recording, but the concentric channel level controls are a pain if you're recording two different sources that you need to ride level on independently, such as a wireless lav and a shotgun. Has anyone modified the Tascam to use two non-concentric knobs in place of the concentric controls. It MAY be an insane idea, but I'm considering trying it, and hoped to benefit from the experience of anyone who might have tried it. The price difference between the Tascam and a Sound Devices 702T is considerable.
