Default What is a "vocal mike"?

Mountain bikes are different from cyclocross and road racing bikes,
for obvious reasons. Each of those categories has its own
requirements, and the bikes show it. But what is a vocal mike, and
how do the requirements for recording voice differ from recording an
instrument? So far as I can see, the distinguishing thing about a
vocal mike is that it's larger--much larger--than other mikes.
Perhaps the object is to impress the singer. I can't think of any
other reason to make a mike that large, and I can't think of anything
about the human voice that requires a special mike.

Could someone please enlighten me?
