Default Fostex G24 1" analog machine Help?

Hi guys, once again I bought another analog machine. A Fostex G24 24 track 1" analog machine.
All the functions work play, record, rewind, fast forward. This is minus any levels on the leds. I tried all the channels and channel 12, 13, 24 show a little level. The rest won't show any level in line in or playback.
I tried sliding the 1st four channels out and cleaned the contacts and it didn't do anything. I have two reels of 499 tape. Both are good. I am wondering if its a computer problem? To arm a channel you push the button by it and the channel turns green+red. Not red. There also it a line input button. There also is dolby s noise reduction. A switch on the back has 3 position.. none worked. I know a Tascam MS16 I once had needed a jumper plug to get it to work. Let me know if you know about this beast. Glenn.

Oh, God.

little level. The rest won't show any level in line in or playback.

If you set the outputs to monitor, and you listen to the output and play a
test tape, do you hear anything? If you don't have a test tape, try running
some 1/4" tape with something on it past the heads just so you can tell if
there is anything playing back.

If you measure the power supply voltages, are they good? If one of the
analogue rails is out and the transport control logic voltages are good,
you will see generalized problems like this.

I tried sliding the 1st four channels out and cleaned the contacts and it d=
idn't do anything. I have two reels of 499 tape. Both are good. I am wonder=
ing if its a computer problem? To arm a channel you push the button by it a=

You first need to find out if you have a record problem or a playback problem.
Do you have the manual for this horrible thing?

There also is dolby s noise reduction. A switch on the back has 3 position=
. none worked. I know a Tascam MS16 I once had needed a jumper plug to get =
it to work. Let me know if you know about this beast. Glenn.

I never really worked on any of those narrowtrack machines.... they are
generally a lot more trouble than the professional studio machines because
they aren't really built for maintenance. But I would first identify if you
have a record or play issue, and then I would check the rail voltages if it is
both, and then I would start thinking about the switching logic.

I played a pre recorded 1/2" tape on the recorder. No playback at all. I will see if I can find the voltages on line then test today. GT.

"Oh, God."

Ohh,... so you *now* know God. What did you do, throw out all of those
scientific methods that do not prove anything. Must have been yesterday.
Yep, I bet that was the ticket. I mean egg. Errrror or chicken. Errror or
whatever came first.

My bet is on the Cheekin!

Love always,

HIO

I got a service manual. Checked the voltages. They are not right. It show 5 volts in a few places. Nothing where it should be 15 -15 and 24 volts. bad power supply? GT

Ok thanks for the help. I put the deck aside for now. I have heart surgery on monday. Am going to kill some time on something else next few days. When I get out of the hospital I will find a local tech to help me with the power supply. There is a guy that rebuilds these channel for $60 each for these machines are known for their caps that go bad 40 caps per channel. 24 channels= $1440. This machine is not worth it. GT
