Default sound recording in a car

I´m going to record inside and outside of a moving car. the film will
have place almoust all of the time in the car.
Do you have any sugestions/advices how to rig the mics? hiden and
personal mics. inside and outside the car.
And what kind of problems will i have?
Nad what can i do to resolve them?

This question is discussed regularly on the film/TV production
sound newsgroup: news:rec.arts.movies.production.sound
It is probably worth the time and effort to search the Google
newsgroup archives for some instructive reading.

In summary: they frequently use boundary microphones (such
as Sanken CUB-01) attached to the visor, etc, etc.

And, of course, the "talent" must participate by projecting
and avoiding mumbling, etc. If you don't have a quiet car
with the windows up, be prepared to do "dialog replacement"
(where you re-record the speech in a quiet studio). There
is no magic solution. What you hear is what you get.

What are you recording? Are you trying to get clean dialogue or are you
trying to get good car sounds? What kind of car is it? Is looping the
interior parts totally out of the question?

Last time I made a recording inside a car, I used a Microtrack and a pair of
measurement mics. I probably could have done almost as well using the mics
that come with it.

And what kind of problems will i have?

Wind noise outisde the car if it is moving or the wind is blowing.

Lots of noise at very low frequencies if the car is runnnig and especially
if it is moving.

Nad what can i do to resolve them?

Usual approaches to reducing wind noise when recording outside the car.

Lots of filtering to get rid of the LF noise in post.

I used a Sennheiser MD211n when making a dialogue recording in a driving
car. Lotsa noise from car and from windnoise, but people also speak louder
when is is more noisy.

And what kind of problems will i have?

VLF noise. Especially in a more "silent" car that will not prompt people as
much to speak up as a more "noisy" car.

Nad what can i do to resolve them?

High pass filter & other response shaping, but take care that the whole
shemang doesn't get "ZpiTTy". Reduce distance from mic to vox. How about a
headset mike on the side of the head that is not shown, it makes sense that
most shots will be profile rather than face-on? - just supplementing, not
disagreeing with other follow-ups.

Kind regards

Peter Larsen

Great idea Peter. Next time I'm recording vox in a car, one of the
Countryman E6s will be on the scene.
