Any thoughts on these two preamps for general purpose rock n roll?
Which is the better deal for the money? The Millenia is 2 channel, but the single channel 220 has more bells and whistles. -doug (currently using a UA 2-610 - ..I'd like a less-colored complementary pre)) |

There's nothing wrong with the two preamps you're looking at, but unless you're looking for something that, in the final product, will be significantly better with a high resolution preamp, I'd go for variety rather than high quality. The closer you get to the sound you want straight out of the mic preamp, the easier your mixing job will be - assuming that you know what you want when you're recording. Mixing experience will tell you that if everything going into your mix has the same sonic characteristic, you'll have to spend more time with processing to get things to stand out (or stand back) in the mix. -- If you e-mail me and it bounces, use your secret decoder ring and reach me he double-m-eleven-double-zero at yahoo -- I'm really Mike Rivers ) |

What bells and whistles do you need, though? You want to plug mikes into it and get gain, right? That's what you need in a preamp. I have really liked the Millennia as far as getting the cleanest possible gain goes. This may or may not be your goal, but I think it's a good goal even for rock and roll, personally. --scott -- "C'est un Nagra. C'est suisse, et tres, tres precis." |

"general purpose - rock n' roll"? By that, I meant I'd be recording elec guitar, elec bass, synth, vocals, and maybe a drum kit. As opposed to say, recording an orchestra, bagpipes, veena, broadway shows, etc. Mixing does tell me that recording all my tracks with the 2-610 is too one dimensional- I can relate to your '...everything going into your mix has the same sonic characteristic, you'll have to spend more time with processing to get things to stand out (or stand back) in the mix.' |

I guess I'll just have to hear them and see what I think. The Focusrite 220 Session is single channel preamp with 4-band EQ and a compressor. ...I've been using software for compression and sometimes EQ. Doug |

You might like to cut the difference, and consider something in between like an API or a Hardy M1 or M2. Will Miho NY TV/Audio Post/Music/Live Sound Guy Hey thanks! I'll look into those two. Doug |

I'd like to see if the results are more musical than my software compressor. I look at the additional equipment/preamps as additional 'colors' that I will use in an artistic way. I still have a lot to learn about tracking and mixing. I'm going through trials...and errors. I'm attracted to the 'clean gain' aspect of the Millenia, because the 2-610 is relatively noisy. The one other preamp I've experienced, is the Langevin Dual Vocal Combo. It lacked pizazz, and gain. |

If you're interested in a good used unit, contact me. The addy from which I post is valid. -- ha Iraq is Arabic for Vietnam |

Focusrite - differently colored. Your choice. Peace, Paul |

So, get a Focusrite for a weekend, take a track of yours that you have recorded, put it into a pad and into the Focusrite and see what it sounds like when you turn the knobs. Then spend $200 for an RNC and do the same with that. The RNC is pretty limited in its ability to be used as an effect, but it provides clean compression, it's cheap, and you'll always find it useful for something. If you don't like it you can sell it for what you paid for it. --scott -- "C'est un Nagra. C'est suisse, et tres, tres precis." |

The Focusrite will give you plenty of gain at least. It's compressor is not very exciting. I've never felt it gave me anything I could not do with a decent plugin. The Eq is clean, sounds good and can be quite surgical. I find the sweepable high and low pass to be really useful. I have not used the Langevin, but I can't imagine the Focusrite having more pizazz. I like to record things fairly clean and process afterwards, rather than getting the colour on the way in, so it works for me. |
