Default Transporting / shipping an OTARI 2" open reel recorder

Hi,

Any advice on the actual mechanics of shipping an OTARI 2" recorder?
It's gonna go with the rest of my stuff in a freight container but
obviously it'd need to be crated properly. I however don't know what
"properly" means even if I let the freight company do it. Do I need to
advise them on the correct way or?? Do I remove the headstack, motors
etc.... or?? As you can see, I'm not even sure how to transport this
beast and need to know from those who have that experience.

Thanks a lot for your help.

I think you can leave the motors in place, but secure the tension arms
so they don't flap. It might be a good idea to remove the heads and
pack them separately. Depending on how the container is being moved,
you might want to remove all the cards from the card cage. Those are
some pretty large cards and might not take well to a lot of bouncing
around.

There are a few moving companies that specialize in moving electronic
equipment, so if this is a domestic shipment, you might want to check
with one of those places. I know that United Van Lines has a division
that handles electronics.

Headstack definitely comes off. I don't know about the motors on this
machine. Some machines, like the Ampex 440, need to be shipped with
motors pulled, others have a top plate that isn't so much of a problem
(and lighter motors).

The service manuals for most of these machines will have a section on
how to prepare them for shipping, and how to install them when they are
first set up, which will detail these things.

If you're shipping via truck (freight container kinda sounds like it's
going on a boat) I've done it three times with mtr-90's. Between
Colorado, Kansas City, Upstate New York and Rhode Island.

Each time the machines were shipped via United Van Lines. Each was a
simple "blanket wrap" on one of their "air ride" trucks. No crates. See
that a large note is attached to the top of the deck's blanket wrap
saying "do not place anything on the top of this". The remote control on
wheels went on the truck with them.

Give them a call. Each time I had a very good experience. The air ride
trucks are for the good ****. They kiss your ass. Ask all your
questions. Pay for the insurance.

As Scott said, you gotta remove the headstack, wrap it very well and
ship via your fave shipper with plenty of insurance. Ship the remote
control cables this way as well cuz it's cheaper than the truck. Don't
send the headstack on the truck. (I think I removed the 90's power cable
to ship with the remote's cables but don't quote me ;.)

No real problems shipping them. They used to arrive fully assembled in
wooden crates from Japan. It is a good idea to check that the transport
screws are in the underside of the deck as otherwise it can flip up if
the machine is inadvertantly tilted. This will wreck the shield motor &
v.u. panel.
If you want to make the machine lighter for get in/out (and it is an
MTR90) the PSU is plug-in & comes out easily.
