Hi there,
I have the Akai GX-625 Open Reel tape deck which has a two-position tape selector: Wide Range WR and Low Noise LN. Does anyone know the correct tape selector for the following tapes : 1. Ampex/Quantegy 499 Grand Master ? 2. Ampex/Quantegy 456 ? TIA, Luiz Regis |

If you are not prepared to open it up and adjust the bias and EQ by actual measurement, then your best bet is simply try them both, and see which is better. I am not familiar with the deck in question, but not all decks can properly bias these tapes anyway. With the current cost of tape, surely near enough is not good enough? MrT. |

Even if you knew which one was the "right" one, the difference between something that is approximate and a machine that has been properly biased and EQed for the specific tape can be enormous. As Mr T said, with the cost of tape today, it would be worth doing it properly, even if you have to pay someone to do it, provided of course you then stick to the same tape. S. |
