Default What's the Latest Greats small A/D/A

What's the best bang for the buck, small (not necessarily totally
remote) audio/computer interface? There are a ton of them and you
can't really go listen to all of them.

I want something to connect to my mac laptop. It doesn't have to be
powered by the laptop and I don't that it is a good idea to do that
any (actually no opinion there). I really only need 2 in 2 out but more
is better to an extent. I want to use my powerbook, a tascam us-2400 or
similar, cubase, and an audio interface for a semi portable recording
station.

Let the opinions fly ~

And thanks for any input

Considering the level of the question it's rather difficult to answer, it is
exceedingly difficult to identify a "best" without substantial additional
information. I'd guess that the M-Audio gear is probably about what you're
looking for; reasonable price, reasonably high quality, overall a fairly
good beginning solution.

The problem with asking for the "best" is that there are options in
recording from $35 to $35,000, each with different capabilities and flaws.
The key to a good recording is using the correct tool, not using the "best"
one.

I'm down sizing from a 48 channel analog board and 32 tracks of motu
d/i. I want moving touch sensitive faders on 24 tracks at a time (not a
switched set of 8 or 12) and I want quality that is good without being
something I would have to squint my ears to notice was a little better
then great. There are some $3000 units that people say are great but I
can't really hear $2400 in better sound then the echo, motu, or firepod
type products.

M-audio is something I have not looked at yet but the most important
part of this for me is the flying faders. I want something to move the
daw faders more then anything else. THe rest is pretty easy to figure
out.

Thanks

Danny

If you are considering that level of product then the M-Audio equipment is
probably not what you're looking for. Like I said M-Audio is "reasonable" in
many ways, but I don't think it could be argued as "exceptional" compared to
devices costing several times the cost. Hank's recommendation is probably
more in-line with what you're looking for.

I'd look at the MOTU UltraLite, since you've used MOTU converters in
the past.

I don't know what to suggest for you Danny, but I know that if I were
shopping for a new interface I wouldn't buy anything until I had at
least checked to see what RME has to offer. I can't think of another
brand that seems to receive such universally positive user comments.

I use an Mbox for that application myself, but only because I need to
use Pro Tools with the DV Toolkit option.

The M-audio Project Mix I/O has moving faders and supports Pro Tools
M-Powered. I just bought a bundle with the two for $1250. It is
rather big to move around, but then I suspect anything with moving
faders will be. Why do you need moving faders for two tracks?

I have their Digi9652 (now discontinued) and love it. The metering software
is superb. I would certainly second Lorin's recommendation.

They also have a pretty good dedicated newsgroup that offers a good bit of
support, including comments from the RME staff. A good company making good
gear.

Two tracks in - I end up with around 20 to 28 tracks per tune when I
am all done with percussion and all.
