Folks, hope you don't mind me posting here but I have tried many other
means without success.

I have a reeltoreel from 60's where everything works except the right
spindle (takeup) - without continual manual help playing tapes is
impossible. (the sound from my wedding is on one of these tapes)

I have opened the case and cleaned as much as I can (Qtip) around the
right spindle (there is a spring on the shaft that had black gunk).
The right spindle will turn only with a nudge with finger - it will not
move when a tape is attached.

The left spindle works great (rewind) - it is on a belt from the motor.
The right spindle though seems to be driven by a rubber wheel
that when 'play' is activated, the wheel moves to make contact with
the actual takeup right spindle. It does make contact - not sure if it
should be in 'the groove' or not - (it isn't) and with some help the
takeup spindle will turn, but it doesn't have enough oooomph with a
tape.

The only other part i noticed was that after cleaning the right spindle
will spin (after a nudge) when vertical, but if the deck is placed
horizontally it will stop...even without a tape attached.

Hope I have included important info and understandable terminology.

Any and all help to fix this is much appreciated......Larry

What model is it?

Well, if you had said what model it was, we could probably point you
in the direction of getting a rubber kit for it. Probably needs lubrication
and the brakes checked too.

Well, if you had said what model it was, we could probably point you
in the direction of getting a rubber kit for it. Probably needs lubrication
and the brakes checked too.

Okay, it's a consumer single-motor machine. Call Parts Express and ask
them if they have a complete belt kit and idler for the thing.

You may need to take it to your local TV repair shop, if you have such
a thing, if Parts Express doesn't have crossreferences. The real problem
is going to be the idler puck.

In a pinch, soaking the idler in methyl acetate overnight may soften it up,
but really once rubber parts get hard and start slipping, they need to be
replaced.

Don't forget also to lubricate the motor bearings with a light machine
oil or turbine oil (NOT 3-in-1 crap) and while you are at it, hit anything
that looks like a sleeve bearing. Lubrication points may be listed in
the service manual.

Sam's Photofacts will sell you a complete service manual for $22 with
all the required information. It's Photofact TR-42 and you can probably
order it online from www.samswebsite.com. I don't know offhand if it
lists belt lengths and idler diameters; it may only list original RCA
part numbers which are less than useful today.

It Works!

I took the easy way out - used a nail file to rough up the 'spindle
puck' and I was amazed, it actually works now. Not sure of course for
how long, but hopefully long enough to transfer all the reeltoreel
tape.
