Hi
i'm currently using a rode nt1 mic running through a joemeek VC6Q pre
amp.
i'm recording rapping into audio tracks in cubase sx.
its a very modest setup but i'm considering buying a new microphone
and wanted to ask the experienced producers in here what mic for a
budget of £200 uk pounds i should buy?

the rapper/vocalist likes his vocals to be punchy and clear.
the rode nt1 i record gives good results but i have to added a little
bit of bass to the vocals to make them sound warmer/thicker.

should i get the rode NT2 ? or is there a more suitable mic out
there?

THANKS FOR THE HELP GUYS

If you are only working with the same on rapper all the time then the both
of you should really go somewhere that has a large selection of mics in your
price range and have him try out EVERYTHING at and below your budget range
and see what works best ( take your VC6Q with you ). On the other hand if
you are recording more than one singer/rapper or even if its just one guy
but you do a wide range of styles or types of songs, you should probably try
to build up a small collection of versatile mics. So possibly keep your NT1
( or sell it an upgrade to the NT1a if you like that better ) and get a
second mic that is very different from it. That way you have a better chance
of getting a good match for each song and / or singer.

Since the Rodes often tend to be on the bright/crisp side, a mic that might
complement it well ( and be of serious respectable quality ) might be a
Shure SM7B :

If you search around you can easily find a new one for $349 and there might
be a chance you can still get one for $299 ( I'm talking US$ here. British
pounds are about 1.5 times the value of US dollars right??? So you should be
able to get one within your budget ) And then good used ones show up
occasionally for much less.

Best of luck!

He'll need good luck to find an SM7B at those prices in the UK! Very few
places carry them over here and the cheapest I've ever been able to find them
for is about £350 ($660), with the majority of stores charging more like
£400. (Shure's list price is £460, inc VAT - $870!)

Wow! I didn't realize that! Here in the states Broadcast Supply Worldwide
has SM7B's for $349 ( which is about £182 ) :

And they ship internationally. I don't know what the shipping, duty and
taxes etc would add up to though.
