Sure. Battery and a rotary converter. Seriously, how many watts?

How much current? How good a sine does it really need to be? Could
you survive with a ferroresonant regulator or a line conditioner instead
of a UPS?

Thanks Klay and Scott...

I've got an Equitech 1.5Q (15 amps) so I'm set in that specific area...my main purpose is for minor brownouts that happen once in a blue moon, or the twice a year complete power failure (sans the hurricanes!). We have wonderful storms here in Tampa Bay too, so once June hits I need to be prepared. The sine quality needs to be good enough where it doesn't effect the audio adversly, as if it wasn't there. It's a medium size mix room (28x16x2 console, 40u of Class A outboard, Ampex ATR two track, ADAM and PMC actives, computer), not sure how many watts are needed.

Hi Nathan,

I purchased this Tripp Lite model for my computers :
http://www.tripplite.com/products/pr...productID=2547

It has enough capacity to handle my internet computer, DAW computer,
external SCSI drive rack and three LCD monitors. I've never had a problem
with it. I use it rack mounted but you can use it as a 'tower' on the floor
too. It has a small cooling fan in it but it's only noticeable when the
computers are off and even then I doubt it would interfere with recording
etc unless it was within a foot of a mic recording something very soft.

I think they are around $700 list but you can easily find them between $400
and $500. Here's a couple places :

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...8952&CatId=235

http://newsite.pagecomputers.com/sto...ct%5Fid=240060

The best part ( for me! ;-) is that I got a deal on it a couple years ago on
Ebay. Brand new and only $175 ( her did over charge me a little on ground
shipping, $70, but it was still a great deal )

Best of luck!

In that case, you also have a big enough chunk of iron that a
mostly-sine-wave output will work fine (the extra harmonics will just
become heat and vibration in the Equitech.) You also get some extra
flywheel effect from all that iron so a standby UPS (rather than a full
online) should work well.

A heckuva lot more then 400-600.

In this case (I can't believe I'm saying this), an APC might be your
best bet.

Go here and buy one of these:

The P3 International Kill-A-Watt is surprisingly accurate:

It can tell you much that will help size power distribution and backup
power.
