The ads seem to be touting the mics for broadcast voice. Have you tried
them on vocals?

Steve,

I haven't seen the ad, but the Heil mic I have is better for guitar cabs
than it is for vocals.

Steve,

I have the Heil PR20, which kicks butt for guitar cabinets.

Hello all...

You may want to visit http://www.k4qky.com/hamradio/pr30.htm for a review of
the Heil PR-30 and http://www.k4qky.com/hamradio/pr40.htm for the Heil
PR-40.

Bear in mind that both reviews are written from the perspective of an
amateur radio operator since Heil has, up until now, been marketing mics
primarily for that audience. However, it is my understanding that the PR40
works especially well on vocals as well as drums.

Nice guy. I reviewed several of his mics a year or so ago. I think at least
one review is up in my archives.

Ty, do us all a favor and see if Heil will send you his PR 30 and PR 40
models for review. The timing could be right, because I've seen recent ads
for these mics. I've just tried out several older RE20s that have been in
storage for a few years. They sounded okay, but cosmetically they're pretty
bad. If the PR30 or 40 is a step up from the Gold Line Pro you favorably
reviewed, they may be a viable alternative to RE20, SM7, and 421 dynamics.
Incidentally, am I the only one that feels that it is a crap shoot to get a
decent sounding early 421. I've recently run into a couple in video
producer's "booths" that sound sorta lifeless--- soft on the top end.

I had a sample of the first model. It was *extremely* sensitive to p-pops,
also handling noise. And it had a classic boom-and-tizz frequency response,
with poorer articulation (on a dance caller) than an old EV 660. We sent it
back. Possibly the newer ones are improved.

Peace,
Paul

Given his Joe Walsh connection, I think so

Too much foam in the booth?

There was some foam, but I don't think that was it. The AKG 414 in the same
booth sounded like I would expect.

I remember a book he wrote about sound reinforcement. I have it somewhere.
