viz; is external word clock desirable for the purpose of mixing out of a

Kaiser desirable ? perhaps. mandatory? no. If it's a great song and performance it won't matter anyway; same thing holds true if it's a crappy song/perfomance. -- Digital Services Recording Studios http://www.digisrvs.com |

IF the quality of the word clock you are supplying is better than the quality of the clock inside the converters AND if the ability of the converters to lock to external clock is good, then yes it will be a good thing. IF you are supplying a clock that is less accurate than the internal clock, or the internal converters are not designed well to chase external clock, then it will be a bad thing. Are replacement tires a good thing for your car? Yes, if the new tires are better than the old ones, but not if they aren't. --scott -- "C'est un Nagra. C'est suisse, et tres, tres precis." |

No. Word clock is a method of getting multiple digital devices to run at
the same speed. Digital devices have an oscillator that runs at whatever speed it runs based on the crystal frequency and power supplied. Since two units won't have the exact same frequency or power supplied, they won't be running at the same speed. Word clock takes this out of the equation, establishing a clock that all devices follow (assuming one has them specified to master out and slave in) thus taking the functional differences of internal clocking away. Word clock and digital sync methods like ABS or MTC or SMPTE are two different things. Word makes the machines run at the same speeds, digital sync means that each frame being played is the same on each machine. Since you only have the MOTU 1296 (from what you said) you need not worry about Word. -- Roger W.
