I'm trying to hook up my compressor, which has XLR outputs only, to a
Kurzweil Rumour, which accepts only TS or TRS connectors. I've tried using an XLR to TS cable with no luck, as the sound coming into the Rumour sounds trebly and thin, with very little bass response. If I were to use an XLR - TRS balanced cable, would I be able to connect these two units correctly and get the full signal to the Rumour? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Greg |

I've tried
using an XLR to TS cable with no luck, as the sound coming into the Rumour sounds trebly and thin, with very little bass response. Since you're listening to the output of the Rumour, you know for sure that it's the input that is sounding thin & trebly? IOW, you're checking with the effects bypassed, right? If I were to use an XLR - TRS balanced cable, would I be able to connect these two units correctly and get the full signal to the Rumour? If the Rumour truly has balanced TRS inputs & the XLR - TRS cable is wired properly, then yes, that will fix the problem. I suspect, though, that you can equally well use an unbalanced TS cable. It sounds like your XLR - TS cable is wired pin 3 hot, or else your compressor is pin 3 hot or not in fact truly balanced. Scott Fraser |

Thanks for the replies, everybody. The compressor I'm using is a
Chandler LTD-2, which have XLR in/outs only. Not sure if there's a transformer there. The XLR-TS cable seems to the problem, since I've gone out from the LTD-2 with XLRs to a Speck ASC equalizer, which accepts XLR or 1/4", and has the same for outputs. So if I go out the compressor via XLR into the Speck, then out from the Speck with TRS to the Rumour, the sound is fine. I was hoping to be able to bypass the Speck and go from the Chandler to the Rumour using the right cable, but perhaps there is an impedance mismatch which the Speck somehow corrects. Maybe I'll just keep the Speck in the chain and bypass when not using the eq. BTW, in case you haven't heard it, the Chandler compressor rocks. That's why it's permanently connected in my signal chain! Greg |

Strange, thought I posted a response this afternoon, but it didn't
show up. Anyway, the compressor is a Chandler LTD-2, not sure if there's a transformer on the output. I don't know how the XLR-TS cable I tried is wired. Right now, I'm using a Speck ASC equalizer in the signal chain, which accepts the XLR from the Chandler and offers a TRS output that I connect to the Rumour. I was hoping to take out the Speck, but maybe I'll just keep it in and bypass when I don't need eq. Thanks all. Greg |
