Default Marantz PMD 430 - line out level?

On my PMD430 the line out level seem to be that of the incoming mic.
not the 'normal' line level: i.e. when I monitor the mic in through
the line out the levels don't seem to be changed. Is this normal?

TIA!

Been a while, bit if I remember correctly, if you are in "monitor" mode,
line out is coming off the tape; if in "source" mode, line out is
bridged from the source input.
