I have a question for you audiophiles:

Are TV's with the built in DVD/VCR's just as good sounding or should I
buy separate units...

I am not looking for anything 'too fancy', just some good decent sound.

I know VCR's are pretty much obsolete these days, but I have so many old
movies that I hate to get rid of them and replace them with dvds.

I stongly recommend separate vcr or dvd units. The combo's die like flies.
So do separate dvd players, but at least you can replace them cheap.

As from my experience in the service business for many years, I would
strongly recommend separate units. If one of them goes defective you
loose both. These units are more expensive to buy, and more expensive to
service, if the particular fault is worth to service when out of
warranty.

As for reliability, we found them to be less reliable over their
lifespan. The power supply is shared with both the TV and VCR, and takes
a higher load factor. They make these units very conservately to keep
the cost and size down, and there is an added cost of its lifespan on
the part of the consumer.

Define decent. Most TV's only have mediocre sound, at best.

Not obsolete since so many folks, like yourself, still have lots of VHS
movies.

All the units I've seen are low end and somewhat difficult to use. They
are convenient, however. There is nothing to hook-up, you just pop them
out of the box, connect an antenna or cable and go.

This type of unit doesn't have to be low end, but they are targeted for
a price sensitive market.
