Default whats best computer speaker system (audiophile opinion) CreativeItrigue L3800 or Logitech Z-2300 ?

whats best computer speaker system (audiophile opinion) Creative Itrigue
L3800 or Logitech Z-2300 ? I purchased the Creative Itrigue 3800's to
replace the Logitech Z-2300 however i am going to have to return the
creative units to Creative Labs (sound out one speaker, molded shape
paired connectors two white to single speaker or two red -- maybe a defect
?) so when i get my replacement Intrigue L3800's i'd like to know which
would be better from an audiophile stand point for someone that only
listens to music and watch dvd's (no games).

thank you

Sorry. Neither. At least IMHO.
None of those little plastic "computer speakers" have anything
remotely resembling a decently smooth frequency response.

I've *never* heard or seen anything called a "computer
speaker" that was worth crossing the room for. Perhaps
I have just been unlucky so far, but those miniature drivers
they put in the L & R "sattelites" couldn't hope to reproduce
anything close to the upper cutoff frequency of the "sub-
woofer". Thus, they all have huge gaps in the midrange.

If you want something at least half-way decent in the way
of powered speakers for a computer, consider the small
powered monitors they sell for home studio use.

From an 'audiophile' prespective both are total junk.

You've bought into a silly notion.

"Computer speakers" are a convenience, when you want some sort of
speaker to connect to your computer, but the soundcard doesn't have
enough power to properly drive the speakers. You choose them
when you want something compact, and don't care about sound.

They aren't labeled "computer speakers" because you need special
speakers for your computer, but because you generally wouldn't
want to use them for something else.

At the low end, you have the equivalent of a transistor radio, ie
a speaker in a plastic box with no further concern. You see horrid
configurations, because "computer speakers" are by definition cheap,
so two puny speakers that couldn't handle bass frequencies get set
up with a "subwoofer' that in itself can barely handly bass frequencies
and likely can't handle the low frequencies where a subwoofer actually
comes into play.

(To explain it, real subwoofers are for handling very low frequencies,
that good speakers generally wouldn't handle. The interesting thing is
at the frequencies where they kick in, there is no directionality (or
something like that) so stereo would mean nothing. Hence one speaker can
handle the very low frequencies from both channels of a stereo system.)

Maybe when you start paying good money for "computer speakers" you
actually get something decent, but at that point one has to wonder
why you'd want to stick with "computer speakers".

You get an actual amplifier, and you get real speakers. There's
your "computer speakers". You get things that will actually reproduce
the sound properly. It takes up a little more space, but you get
a lot more flexibility, being able to pick the amplifier separately
from the speakers, just like any stereo system you'd use to play
your CDs or records.

You can even cheat. Buy some good speakers, and then buy a used
amplifier. Or buy used speakers too.

My first "computer speakers" were a pair of metal cased car speakers
I got at a garage sale for five dollars, and a Delco digitally
tuned radio (I paid about $7 at another garage sale for it)
running off a 12v supply. I had to modify the radio to provide for input
jacks for the soundcard output. But I got a reasonable sound system,
certainly better than if I'd spent the money on "computer speakers"
and even if I'd spent more money on those "computer speakers".

I'm not using the same system, it's morphed through various speakers
and amplifiers as I found them at garage sales. I kept changing
mainly because I could get something different cheap. A few months
ago, I found a digitally tuned stereo receiver for ten dollars, and
put that in, its switching capabilities made things simpler for me.
If I don't want to listen to the computer, I have the radio, or
the cassette deck, or the turntable. It's just a stereo system
with one of set of inputs coming from the computer.

SOme people can live with a boombox (or can't afford something
more and don't realize they can buy used and get far better). That's
what "computer speakers" are for. Other people want full blown
systems, and they get them. That you are using a computer for a sound
soruce shouldn't change that one bit. Indeed, since you are really
using the computer as a CD and DVD player, if you weren't using
the computer, would you go for a boombox or want a full stereo
system?

As others have mentined, all 'speakers sold as "computer speakers" are total
junk. I don't know of any exception. I use a pair of Genelec 1029a powered
'speakers, which are small enough to be used on a desk, yet quite good
enough for even serious listening. You can get a pair on Ebay for a few
hundred pounds.

Most of the people here are jerks. Try rec.audio.high-end, or a computer

Neither are remotely describable as 'audiophile', let alone hi-fi.

I had a set. I never liked the built in loudness control. After the woofer was
damaged by something, I gave the set away last winter. I wanted to get
something quick and cheap, and I was very surprised at the averall quality
of what I got at Office Max......
