Stravinsky's "The Nightingale" has been made into a Fantasia-style
mix of 3D CG animation and live action film. The filmmaker
is Christian Chaudet. It was aired on the "Great Performances"
show Wenesday, December 21st.

This thing is pretty impressive. They have a DVD for sale.

You can also buy the CD at Amazon, and presumably other record stores.
Search for "rossignol", not "nightingale".

The CD of the recording used for the film is wonderful - truly beautiful.
Great direction from Conlon, and Ms Dessay's voice is simply exquisite. EMI
have also added a good version of RENARD too which rounds out the disc
nicely.

The ABC in Australia played the CGI film a few months ago and I have to say
that I was impressed by the imagery and effects and visual style overall,
but very disappointed by the extensive intrusive use of loud sound effects
that really spoilt the actual music!
CAVEAT EMPOUR: Don't buy the DVD for the music, buy the CD instead.

Agreed. I understand the rationale for the sound effects (to integrate the
visuals with the music), but they were too loud. About 6dB softer would have
been better.

I had heard that you can choose to play either of two soundtracks with
the video: with or without the sound effects. When my copy arrives
tomorrow, I will be able to confirm this (or not).

Nice one, Kal. Well worth it if it does offer these options.

Thanks. That has a bearing on whether or not I buy it.

If true, it shows common sense on the producer's part. Nice!

I can tell you right now that this is the case. I have the DVD and
watched it without the sound effects (which I thought would be
unnecessary anyway).

Awsome DVD - beautiful music and singing. Can't recommend this enough.
