the latest from Tom Albertz/tom/surf/sam/mr. anderson/pat mabotton
etc., etc., etc.: sammy-surf speculated: snipped hey - I'm thinking about doing a ride in early September. maybe 150 miles or so. If you enjoy cycling, I say go for it, Tammy! any thoughts? This time of year, cyclists thoughts turn to the Tour de France (TdF). Here are two pieces of TdF lo In 1975, Belgian rider Eddy Merckx is in the lead and on his way to a record breaking sixth TdF victory when he is punched hard in the kidney/liver/stomach (accounts vary on this) by a French fan who cannot bear to see a Belgian break a record originally set by a Frenchman. Although Merckx finished the TdF, he never fully recovered from the blow and failed to win a sixth TdF. ***Lesson: riding in front of a hostile crowd can be hazardous. In 1985, French rider Bernard Hinault was on his way to his fifth TdF win when he crashed and broke his nose. Unable to breathe well, Hinault slowed considerably in the following days, but still won the TdF with the help of his American team mate, Greg LeMond. ***Lesson: you can ride with a broken nose if some one helps you along. So, enjoy the ride. Bring a camera and post some pictures. Do try to avoid hard punches to the mid-section and broken noses. And bring some team mates, just in case. |

As would anybody who deserts his wife and 3 children (one pair twins) for Cheryl Crow? Arny, by most accounts, the private Lance Armstrong is not a pleasant person to be around. That said, apparently it was Mrs. Armstrong who wanted the divorce. She grew tired of the demands of the lifestyle of a high level pro cyclist (constant travel, living in Europe much of the time, etc.) It will be interesting to see how long Crow stays interested after Armstrong retires and the spotlight dims. |

Anyway, it doesn't change my thoughts about him fighting a potentially deadly disease and come out of it as a winner. -- "Audio as a serious hobby is going down the tubes." - Howard Ferstler, 25/4/2005 |

What about Lance Armstrong? If there's any lesson, it's how to fight cancer and be a winner. That is a wonderful story, Sander. Interestingly, Armstrong's ordeal may have made him a better rider by raising his pain threshold and putting the suffering of climbing a big mountain in perspective (Armstrong himself has suggested this). Prior to his illness, Armstrong was a good, not great, cyclist. He won a few stages in the TdF, but only finished once, in 36th place. After the illness, he was a different rider. IMO, not quite at the level of Merckx, or even Hinault, but dominant in his era. I have a deep respect for this man. Agreed. I also marvel at the way Greg Lemond came back from very nearly fatal shotgun wounds to the chest to win two more Tours. |
