Default Hiss reduction and amplification in Cool Edit Pro question

The best answer to this and similar questions is, IMO, to try it both
ways and use your ears to determine which is better.

My intuition tells me that there would be litlle or no audible
difference. Technically, hiss reducing first makes sense because hiss
is amplified along with desired signal.

Is it better to hiss reduction first and then amplification, or the
other way around?

In 16 bit mode, amplify first if the gain is 1 ( 0 dB) , after hiss
reduciton if the gain is 1 ( 0 dB).

In 32 bit mode, it probably doesn't matter over a very wide range of levels.

I would think hiss reduction first would be better because the hiss
would be amplified in the opposite order.

True in 16 bit mode.
