There are AES and IEC standards for digital interfacing that will help
here. They won't last forever, but will probably be of value for as long
as you want to use the hardware. ADAT optical isn't one of them though
stereo through Toslink optical is covered. AES50 covers multichannel
audio using Ethernet hardware.

USB is a computer communication protocol which is used to send data
between an A/D converter to a computer but isn't really applicable to
passing data from an A/D converter to a computer interface.
