True enough, and compound that with the artist who's
attempting to build his base. The loss of true local radio
imho is hurting as much as anything, especially in these
days where supporting your act on tour is an even more
expensive proposition. Back when I was a young man there
were many places supporting live music, even youth centers
and high school events had truly live music. Everything
from the lounge at the holiday Inn to regular nightclubs had
live music.

One could tour and make an actual living. But the cost of
that type of touring has increased at a level outstripping
the amount in the pay envelope for most. Couple this with
the loss of local outlets wehre one could get heard and
build one's fan base and it's a real problem.

YEs, in theory the internet in its many guises can offer you
ways to reach potential customers, but it's hard to poke
yourself through the noise to get noticed. Compare that
with playing your local club and getting the attention of
the local jock who played you on his radio show.

There are indeed many benefits as well as drawbacks to new
models such as spotify, but the viability of going out there
flogging it repeatedly on tour and using teh sales of
records to help by subsidizing the tour is gone. The folk
scene might have it a bit easier here as those house party
gigs can at least enable one to make a living. After all
it's easier to just bring in one's acoustic guitar and play
for the house party. Jazz and other genres that don't lend
themselves to this as readily have a problem though. Just
making the nut to keep the show on the road is often a
costly proposition.

Jazz clubs (that really do play jazz) are a vanishing breed out here.

They have some in Sydney and Melbourne, but not as many as there used to
be.
