You don't need an alternative universe for that. The underground rags
did exactly that. They embraced the potential but were critical of the
poor results. But at the same time the "retro technology" offered
better sound. So what are the rags supposed to do?

What they should have done is told the truth to their readers about
*why* CD sound quality was sub-par. But that would have been very bad
for business.
