I discover the wireless receiver on an Apple TV is kind of marginal, at
least when compared to my MacBook Pro. I had to get an ethernet over
power line kit to make it work without dropouts.

Interesting. I have a cheap D-Link 802.11n router connected to my computer
and my Apple TV box is clear on the other side of the house and I get perfect
reception. I can sync to the AppleTV from my computer, download You-Tube
videos and high-definition movies directly from the internet, in real time,
without a hitch.

My router is in an upstairs room about 25-30' away plus a floor and four
walls. My computer and ATV are in the same room, a few feet apart. The
computer has never given me trouble. I was getting dropouts and
eventually determined it was the download to the ATV, not the upload
from the computer. It is possible the WiFi receiver in the ATV is
faulty, but it is my third since 8/11, so I am reluctant to try another.

One test was to use airfoil to send to both the ATV and my iPod. The
ATV would dropout but the iPod wouldn't. Even with power line ethernet
the ATV will still drop out but usually for only a couple of seconds
every few hours. I can live with that.

There could be something wrong with the WiFi in the ATV. Under certain
circumstances when testing it would load the whole system down. At
first I thought the problem was with airfoil but it wasn't.
Unfortunately, I don't know how to test the thing and, as I said, it is
working so I am afraid to try another.
