ATM is definitely a cool thing and does allow fixed bandwidth connections
to be made (which effectively is kind of circuit-switched). It actually
scales well down to the desktop too, though it never seems to have caught
on down there. I'd take an ATM/SONET local loop over PPPOE any time,
and it would FINALLY means we could dump the use of ISDN for medium quality
audio circuits.
