A USB Powered Voice Recorder

Rechargeable AAA batteries - i don't know if they're

This is no problem. AAA rechargeable cells are easy to fine, and many AA
chargers are also equipped to handle AAA cells. A camera shop is a
better place to look for battery things than a music store.
I spent $30 on a MP3 player for my mother. Ok, it's a no brand Asian
made thing. But guess what, it plays MP3's, has a FM radio and a voice
recorder. The voice recorder works brilliantly.
Come to thing of it, I have one of those too, but its recording input is
line level only, apparently intended to record from a CD player. I've
never actually used that capability, just used it as a player. It's a
Toshiba, not exactly a no-brand, but not very common either. I bought it
because it was on sale for about $30 and I could read the display. It
has an internal battery that recharges when you connect the player to a
USB port.
I had one previously that took a mic input for recording, and another
one before that which said it had a recording function, but didn't. Both
of those went back to the store for refunds because I couldn't read the
display.
