We can assume which sold more based simply on cost. Chevys and Fords
and Dodges outsell BMW and Mercedes for no other reason than cost in
the US. More Chevy Luminas are sold than Corvettes.
You can look at eBay and see what is more available today as an
indication. There are far more Fisher and Scott and Eico and Dynaco
amps than McIntosh.
I'm sure that you're aware that the average male annual income in the
US in 1962 was about $4,400. I'd guess the hobby was as dominated by
men then as it is now. And besides, just like now, women made
less. ;-)"
Last thing first, women made less ON AVERAGE because on average they were
not full time career workers, and because on average they were in less
physical, less unpleasant jobs. Most jobs then were in the manufacturing
sector and many needed considerable physical handling. People understood
that most women would have children and devote themselves to the essential
job of childrearing, a job that is disproportionally female by nature.
Women who were full time career nonparent workers made good money. The
electronics industry figured out early that women could consistently
assemble electronics faster and with less mistakes than men and would work
in those positions for years or decades whereas men quit in frustration and
were less accurate and slower. That meant a lot of good jobs for women in
electronics.
Lots more Fisher and Dynaco and Scott amps are on eBay because they stay
in the US and float around from hobbyist and dilettante and curiosity
buyer to buyer whereas Mc tends to be sold from estates only once-to Asian
buyers-and it never appears here again. Asian buyers have been draining us
of Mcs and US made tube Marantzes and WE theater gear for thirty years.
They never touched Dyna and Heath and Fisher and HH Scott, until recently.
Although a 300SL Gullwing Mercedes from 1957 is one of the most valuable
postwar collector cars in existence, most 1957 Mercedes are worth less
than most 1957 Chevys. Most '67 Chevys are worth more than most '67
Mercedes. Many, many people who would not have a Benz or a BMW as a gift
want Chevelles and Monte Carlos and El Caminos and Camaros and Corvettes.
BMW has yet to make an engine as good as a good four bolt main forged
crank Gen 1 350 Chevy. BMWs and Mercedes use very troublesome Bosch
electrics, unlike Chevys which use the best automotive electricals in the
world, GM Delco/Delphi. Mercedes can't make an automatic trans as good as
a 700R4 and BMW is dependent on overpriced Getrag junk.
Give credit where it's due, a (Euro spec) BMW is a good Autobahn car and
no stock US car is. And they're way ahead of us on common rail diesels.
But, there are no Autobahnen within 4000 miles of me and you can't have a
Euro spec car here unless it's older than Britney Spears. So I'll stick
with my present cars.
That's all besides my main point, if you want to reproduce a tube amp,
don't reproduce the worthless Dynaco. reproduce the McIntosh.
(There is a reissue 275, but it's a cheapened, all circuit board piece of
****.)
