Default Louder IS Better (With Lossy)

I am seeking facts regarding how to produce better MP3s than Joe Sixpack
can make by himself at home. It will help to give my business "a
leg-up" on the local competition.

First, you need to define "better." We've been trying to do that for
years. On one end of the scale you have "better" being a wide dynamic
range, on the other end of the scale, it's having a very narrow
dynamic range so that it can be encoded and played as close to maximum
level as possible. And off to the sides you have the "wow, listen to
all that bass" and "better restrict the frequency response so the IM
distortion won't make the vocal warble."

CD Mastering engineers make those decisions many times a day. It seems
that you should be looking into some of the basic philosophies of
mastering, and then try to achieve those goals within the MP3 format.
