external hard drive recommendations

Stay away from plastic cases without fans. They cook the drive. The
optimal material is extruded aluminum, which conducts heat readily, with
the entire enclosure acting as a radiator. You will have more choices if
you buy the drive and the case separately.
If your purpose is audio, Samsung is a good choice, since they are still
significantly quieter than other brands. But except for audio, all other
current drives are quiet enough to be unannoying.

Hi,
I'm new to the group and hope this hasn't been covered too recently.
I would like to purchase an external hard drive to use with my laptop,
which is now an iBook, but will soon be a Mac Book Pro. I use the
laptop for 2 track recording, real time performance using software
synths (battery 3, etc) via a DrumKat MIDI controller, and sound
design using either Digital Performer or Logic (any opinions on those
are welcome, too).
I would like to know what external hard drives other folks use. I'm
looking for portability/small size, firewire, fast drive speed, etc,
and low noise level: no loud fans.
I guess my request kind of borders between a couple of newsgroups
besides this one, but rec.audio.pro has the most members and traffic,
so here I am.
Thanks for your help,
John
I have never used anything with the name "Samsung" on it that worked proerly
for any length of time. YMMV.
