"The opinions were highly divided. Retrospective and prospective
matched studies and comparison with groups included in life tables
were the methods used to compare the long-term effect of CABG. I still
remember the controversies with George Burch, Charles Friedberg,
William Licoff, Henry Russek, Henry McIntosh, and many others. Even
though we were sometimes on opposite sides, we never got involved in
personal issues. On the contrary, the more we debated, the greater was
the level of mutual respect and deep friendship"

Ludo, I just read a current article about Alexis Carrel, inventor of the
organ perfusion pump, and his association with Charles Lindbergh. Today,
there seem to be suspicions that Carrel was a quasi Nazi. Since you were
actually around at the height of his accomplishment, how did you and others
feel about him then?

Thank you for crediting me with unprecedented durability (is this the
right word?). and quasi universal knowleddge of biographies of
scientists. Carrel' greatest achievements took place before I was
born: in 1912. To be honest all I knew about him was that he gave his
name to the "Carrel's cubicles" in medical libraries. On reading your
challenge
I promptly typed "Wikipedia" and learnt that Carrel was not just
"suspected" but in fact held disgusting views about improving the
humankind by eliminating the unworthy in gas chambers. He was an
extreme proVichy, proNazi partisan during the WWII.
It is true that I lived through one of the most shameful periods of
history :in Europe of the past midcentury. Various people (including
myself) held views of which they repented since. Others merrily
participated in crimes. Medical profession does not come with
saintliness. Besides such as Janusz Korczak.who went to the gas
chamber holding the youngest orphanage kid by the hand there was Dr.
Mengele.who sent them there
