So, people are quite often wrong about a key dimension,
when they report their memory of a live musical event.
The implications for those who claim that audio memory
is a sufficient means for determining how much a home
system varies from 'the absolute sound', should be clear.
I would speculate that the
mistaken estimations in level marked a consistent preference for one
distortion (level) to compensate for other distortions (non level)
to create a perceived higher level of accuracy.
You may speculate that, and you would be wrong, plain and simple.
They were not "compensating for other distortions." They were given
guidance on what to do, the individuals involved were knowledgeable
and familiar with the material, the playback system and the concept
of "level." The playback system was a high-quality system, the concert
was performed in a venue that had a very short reverberation time,
i.e., fairly dry.
As I was there, Mr. Wheel, and you were not, I would honestly not be
inclined to trust such speculations at all, with all due respect.
