Are they *still* making SACDs?
There's still market for them in Europe and Japan. In the USA, not so much.
It's the same market via the internet.
Yes, but one tends to pay a hefty premium for buying from overseas, where the selection is
better. I doubt there's a much of a groundswell of SACD/DVD-A sales in the USA even when
internet imports are factored in. So I stand by my 'not so much'. If there were a significant
market here, we'd see more popular releases in SACD/DVD-A format. As it stands, we see mainly
niche products domestically, these days, and those are primarily 'classical' recordings: thus
constituting a small part of a an already small market.
And for 'big' sellers like Dark Side of the Moon or the Stones SACDs or LOVE, there's simply
no way to tell without considerable new market research, how many people bought them for their
'hi rez' aspect, versus having a surround mix, versus just having a new release of old
material. How many Stones SACDs, for example, were sold to people who only have CD players?
It's notable that the Genesis catalogue reissue is being released as CD/DTS here, versus
CD/SACD/DTS in Europe and Japan.
