Default Recommendations for a new computer for converting audio files

Kompu Kid wrote:

My home-built computer is getting old. It has served me faithfully in
converting my cassettes to digital media for the past few years. The
quality was acceptable. The speed was low, but tolerable.

I am looking into a comporable system, this time around off-the-
shelf.

Here is my current configuration:

-- CPU: AMD ATHLON 2200 , 512 K RAM, Soyo SY-KT333 DRAGON Ultra
-- On board CMI 8738 providing 6-channel audio

Any recommendations, any brands and models to avoid?

Get a better sound card (sound card, not sound blaster, you do not want
blasted sound, do you?) and a pair of faster disks and double the amount
of ram and keep the computer, if you have money to spare after that,
then get a "19" wide" screen or better. Just my opinion, you can
probably find someone that will tell you that as long as a sound card
has lower distortion than the compact cassette technology, then it is
ok. It is then their opinion.
