By black plate you mean carbon plate... these tubes were designed for heavy
use in radio transmitters, and can take tons of abuse over regular tubes,
since
the plate can be ran red hot and no one cares... also they could take more
voltage. FM business and some mobile radios in the 70s used them.
I don't think that's the kind of "black plate" the OP was talking about,
but while we are on the subject of heavy duty plate materials, how about
tantalum, another plate material that shrugs off running red hot.
