Russound, Sonance, Niles, and others make impedance matching volume
controls that will work fine in your system. There is no need for the
speaker selector box, just take care to strap the volume controls
correctly.
Amplifiers are upset when the impedance is too low (too many speakers).
The controlls will fix the problem of too many speakers. When your A/B
switch transfers two pairs of speakers, neither amplifier will be in
danger. The second amplifier will be within it's design limit with or
without the controls and the first amplifier will see a reduced
workload when the speakers are switched to the second amplifier.
If either amplifier is 100 Watts or more, I recommend adding a low
filter between that amplifier and the controls (one two channel filter
per amplifier).
