Excuse my extremely limited knowledge. I'm into music, but ignorant on
all the options. I had planned to buy a new receiver after Xmas, but I
got a 32 gb Ipod as a gift. I'm now thinking that I may be able to
pass on the receiver altogether, and just get 4 good speakers. Would
this work? Can I get good enough sound out of an Ipod if I get decent
speakers ?They'd have to be powered speakers (with a built-in amplifier).
If
you're not up on audio gear, it might be easier to get a receiver with a
dock for your player. There are also interface devices of varying cost
and quality, the simplest being a headphone to RCA interconnect, that
can be used with any receiver with a line input.
You'll need to know whether you want stereo or multichannel. Stereo is
easier.

Bose sells a nice Ipod docking station. Just plug your Ipod into it and
it becomes a stereo player. I listened to one at BJ's. Liked the way it
sounded, good base and clear mids.
That would be like getting a big table-top radio. There are similar
products from Apple, Klipsch, etc.
If you want something a step up in class, there's the Arcam Solo with
rLEAD. Add the best speakers you can find and enjoy.
