Perhaps
I've already owned a pair of 988s for years now, and I have them hooked up
to
the Scott as we speak, and I'm testing you. Yes, Devil, that's it! I

KNOW
if
they work or not...but do you know? Hah! Take that! And that! You're
flying
toilets mean nothing to me!

My amps, like my flying umbrella toilets with wings, are superior in
every way to the **** you have in your system. Your amps are crap and
couldn't drive a pair of crystal headphones without the transformer
windings popping apart and catching fire. Your amps homosexually
oscillate at a feminine 3K when they are in the company of fat, bald
men. Your turntable plays records backwards, your house is a
laundromat, you weave baskets in your spare time, wear flowery dresses
and sandals and 'Oh, poo!' with your neighbours about the weather, and
your hair is a pile of turds with bows in it.

As my esteemed contribution to this veritable cornucopia of Evil High End
Establishment falderol, let me add the following to this mortifying display
of
tube bigotry - LOT'S!!!

For many years, I used to drive a pair of Quad ESL-57's with a vintage

toobed
Fishe 400 receiver - 25 watts/channel - 4 7868 Pentodes. Plenty of volume
and
good dynamics. Actually, there was even enough power to drive these in
combination with an M&K subwoofer specially designed to be used with

original
Quads (called "The Bottom End"), where the Fisher provided the power for the
M&K as well ( run through a passive crossover matrix). Don't know how well
the
Fisher would have done with 63's or 988's, however.

Been there, done that. Asked and answered.

If iron knees killed (trademarked creative expression).

A lot of people run Quads with 25-30 wpc, both SS and tubes, so I really
wonder
if 20 is going to make or break it. Like the Devil said, I should borrow
another pair of 63s and see how it sounds. I think 988s are 87 or 88 dB
sensitive, so I think that's right on the border. My Spendor SP100s are 90
dB
sensitive and it's a perfect match, but the impedance stays fairly constant
at
8 ohms. I think the Quads dip below 4 here and there.

Boon

If I recall correctly, the Fisher had 4, 8 and 16 ohm taps. Somebody suggested
I try feeding the Quads off of the 16 ohm taps because of their impedance
variations. I tried it and it worked out very well.
