Big, serious Audio Question: can a 20wpc tube amp drive a pair of Quads?
Which one? I made a pair of 40 watt monoblocs to drive the 989s at my
office. KT88s sound stunning in my amps but lack bass extension and
dynamic impact at loud output levels. I replaced them with KT90s, same
cathode bias resistor (the bias current actually measured exactly the
same as the KT88s!), and now I'm back in familiar volume output
territory--that is to say, louder than I can stand, the way it used to
be with solid state and 63s at my office. My valve amps (called
'TittyTats', note) replaced a 200 watt per side Rotel RB-1080 and / or
Chord SPM1200C (both used at various times). The 989s now play
substantially louder, don't cut out, and sound much better than I've
ever heard them play anywhere else.
I don't think weedy or pretty 'valve-sounding' valves will do the job.
I've avoided using valve amps with Quads until now. I like big dynamic
swings, and little valves don't seem capable of doing that with Quads.
We're talking about a Scott LK-48 using 7189 tubes, which are close to EL-84s.
