I managed to pick up "some bargains" when assembling my system (Denon
PMA-707, Mission 700 speakers & stands for £50 the lot) and have
happily used these for a while with a Technics SL-PG480 CD player. I'm
currently wondering which bit of the system I should upgrade first and
what sort of price I'd be looking at to see a significant improvement
anywhere.
System:
Technics SL-PG480 CD player
Denon PMA-707 Amp
Mission 700 Speakers (on floor stands)
Cable Talk 3.1 speaker cable
Cambridge Audio Arctic CD-Amp interconnect
Any comments gratefully received

Let's have a look to the thread "Spread of costs..." you will deduce
that if you have money to spend, you should put it in speakers.
In your case 90% of the improvement that you can wait from your
investment will come from new speakers and their correct placement in an
adequate listening room.
So the first real investment is in a room
not speakers
it's a hell of a lot easier to change speakers than to change a room no?
Depends but I'm afraid that you are caricaturing my thought...
*Sometime* you can can incredible improvement with with the judicious
placement of a rug or curtains.
For this tweaking you can ask the support of Madam your wife. Typically
the kind of demagogic bearing which will increase the WAF of your
installation and let you hope huge further investments... :-)
Happy ?
Ooops sorry... I start again :-) :
