I suspect you are encountering the "any publicity is good publicity"
phenomenon. Many times I have been to the Wigmore Hall to hear Emma
Kirkby accompanied by Anthony Rooley on lute, and it sounded nothing
like Sting and his crooning (thank goodness).


Part of the alternative view is that nobody really knows how people sang
John Dowland's music in his own time, and that it may not have been the
preserve of trained professional "art" singers.

But I agree Sting is no competition for Emma Kirkby's "artfully artless"
singing style, for sheer listening pleasure.
