MOTU 8 pre and traveler
hi - i am researching a home studio and i am wondering if this would
work - any comments appreciated
++ my daw will be cubase and i want to record everything at 96khz - i
am hoping to do all this without a mixer ( incedentally i dont have a
problem with a mixer but i have already investigated that idea and
nothing seemed to do what i wanted )
++ i want to record a drum kit and bass and then overdub guitars and
vocals
++ i want also to be able to have a couple of different headphone
monitor mixes ( stereo if possible but mono would be ok )
++ ideally i also want to be able to take a line out from the pc
through the traveler and into fx and then back into the unit and re
record it in the daw - ( however this is not really a priority )
my plan is to hook the 8pre into the pc via firewire and the use the
adat lightpipe on the traveler to get either 4 mikes or 4 lineins into
the 8pre at 96khz - so that would be 12 channels in all going into the
pc via the 8pre's firewire
( i am not sure but i wonder if daisy chaining the 2 devices via
firewire would achieve the same thing )
my understanding is that i can use the cuemix software ( which
seemlessly integrates the 2 devices together according to the motu
website ) to set up near zero latency monitoring of the mike ins (so ..
say if i am overdubbing 2 guitarists at the same time, i can set up 2
seperate monitor mixes and they can both hear one another ); and route
these monitor mixes to the outputs of the traveler and from there to
suitable headphone amp(s) etc
the problem i have is how to intgerate monitoring the output of cubase
into this monitoring of the mike ins - according to the motu site, the
main stereo output of the daw can be added to the 2 headphone mixes
which i have set up on the traveller ..... however what i am lost about
is this - as far as i know i set up 2 auxillary monitor mixes on
cubase, but can i route these out along with the regular control room
stereo out from cubase via firewire into the the motu devices and mix
these in with the 2 headphone mixes which i have set up in the
traveller ( and also how to get these mixes from the 8pre into the
traveller )
any help is vastly appreciated
thanks
