Your perfect store
Also top posting, since you might not see my comments if they were
placed where they belong, namely *below* your questions:
I was half serious, half kidding.
I once worked in a hi end store myself, until the owner found out I
sold people what they wanted instead of what brought the highest
profit.
I'm also a DIY-er, and have some knowledge of audio electronics.
An ideal store would be the one where I could select and try out the
components of my choice (within a certain range of course, one can't
expect a store to have everything in stock), connect them myself,
place the speakers and add some room treartment like tube-traps and
such at my own experience.
And where I could listen and change components at will for a few
hours, with my music of choice, without bothering me every minute!
And finally, I would like to have the option of trying a certain
component in my own system at home for a limited period of time.
Since I rarely, if ever, buy commercial audio/video products new or
even in a store, it's a non-existing problem for me, actually.
I build most of my stuff myself, and buy second hand gear and tweak it
as I see fit. But that's not for everyone, I guess.
Sorry to have bothered you with my view of things, just follow the
"recommended components" list in Stereophile and all will be good.

Are you serious or kidding? I don't know what your experiences have
been, would you just like to listen and compare yourself? What if
you're just looking for a single component, how would you know how well
it will work in your system? With all due respect, no salesman wants
to deal with a self proclaimed know it all.

No salespeople.
