Oh yeah, apropos to nothing, I'm going to see Elvis Costello in
Oxford, Mississippi in a little 250 capacity club Friday and Saturday.
I kid you not, the room that the stage is in is about 15 ft X by 20ft
(there are a sum total of four tables in that space, tables that will
be removed for the show), and the stage takes up a third of that. Only
about 70 people are actually going to be able to squeeze in that area
- the rest are going to overflow areas alike the bar and a room where
there's no sightline at all. The shows are a rehearsal for new
material that he's recording in Oxford next week.

Of all the gin joints in all the world, why on earth did Elvis Costello pick
Oxford, Mississippi? Is he a William Faulkner fan?

He's been planning a "southern recording and playing tour" for a
while. He wanted to "soak up local culture" and play some tiny dives.
He's had to scale back his plans though. Otherwise you would have
probably seen him in Austin. Thing is, he heads for Europe toward the
end of April.

He's going to be recording at the place where Buddy Guy made the album
Sweet Tea. Apparently, the producer of those sessions is named Dennis
Herring, and he's worked with Camper Van Beethoven and Cracker before.
Elvis' new bass player, Davey Faragher, is a veteran of both groups
and apparently referred him.

Oh yeah, I ran into both Elvis and Steve Nieve on the street when I
was picking up tickets there yesterday. They seem to be enjoying the
languid ambience. I think that the charm of the place had to do with
some of the decision. I'm sure Davey had nice things to say about the
unpretentiousness of the place, and the Town Square is very reminicent
of High Street in any decent sized British town. I'm sure he feels
right at home.
