I agree - in that price range, I'd probably look to buy a used
integrated amp or receiver (I have an old NAD 7225PE receiver which
sounds pretty good for what I paid for it (used) ages ago, and you can
probably find one for less than $100 now.


NAD stuff has always generally been pretty decent. I nearly worked for them once btw !



I don't know CD players
particularly well, but I have a Sony 5-CD carousel changer that also
plays SACD's, and it only cost about $150.


I'd avoid carousel changers as there's more to go wrong.

Even a 'basic' CD payer these days is very good. You might want to consider using a
DVD player actually to perform a dual role.
