The answer is most likely tube clipping but today it's probably simulated in
DSP. Diodes aren't used as a musical effect except rarely in extreme instances.

Hence the popularity of tube screamers, rats, distortion+ and other
distortion devices. BTW they are all diode/IC based.....

And the "big guys" still use them in combination with big old badass
tube amps. OK some of them use DSP, but that´s not the majority of them

Tubes clip more 'softly' than transistors / ICs etc because of their transfer
characteristics. They also distort more in typical 'normal ' use.
