You are right.
I tried to place a pair of red herrings inbetween a male and a female
XLR connector, and surely, that was not critical indeed.


Using XLRs for speaker cable is stupid and not done in the pro world.

You should buy your cable on the roll and terminate it yourself so you
know what is where.
